Scale up performance

Scaling the storage infrastructure aims to add resources that support applications. This scaling ensures that the required and sufficient performance is improved or maintained. Both virtual and hardware resources can be scaled.
In a hardware context, this could be as simple as using a larger hard drive to significantly increase storage capacity.

Note! Scaling up doesn’t necessarily require changes to your system architecture.

Scaling the infrastructure is possible until scaling individual components becomes impossible.

When to scale up infrastructure?

  • An indicator that you should scale up is when your workloads begin to reach performance limits. This results in increased latency and performance degradation caused by I/O and CPU power;
  • When the effectiveness of performance optimization solutions and storage capacity declines, it is likely time to scale up the system;
  • You should consider scaling out when your application has difficulty distributing processes across multiple servers or dealing with the complexities of a distributed system.
